Overview

The purpose of the Morrelly Homeland Security Center is to focus and accelerate the transfer of technology and ideas into market driven products and systems used to solve key problems in protecting against a terrorist event, while creating jobs in New York State. The Center is creating an environment for innovation by facilitating the convergence of research and technology in the public and private sectors of NY State on issues facing US and NY State Homeland Security.

The Center will be opening in a ‘hardened building’ on Long Island, where Northrop Grumman built the Lunar Excursion Module. More than 20 high tech companies will be housed within the Center. Here, collaboration and cross pollination between the companies, whose technologies offer complementary commercial applications, will be encouraged and stimulated.

The Center differs from other commercial incubators in some very critical of ways:

  1. The companies housed in the Center are not start-ups, but rather well established high tech corporations with complementary commercial applications.
  2. In the event of a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or other catastrophe involving NY State, the nature of the Center will completely change - all technology in the Center will switch to ‘Command and Control’ mode.
  3. The Center will then become the hub for convening all necessary government agencies, first responders, utilities, etc., that are required to deal with emergencies.
